Barcelona is the capital city of the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain and the country's 2nd largest city. Barcelona is one of the world's leading tourist, economic, trade fair/exhibitions and cultural-sports centres, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities.
Although Barcelona is sometimes windy, its protective semicircle of mountains shields it from the harsh, cold winds that blow out of the north and west. The average annual temperature is 61 °F (16 °C); January is the coldest month, averaging 49 °F (9 °C), and August is the hottest, at 76 °F (24 °C). Precipitation amounts to about 23 inches (600 mm) per year.
Barcelona is well-connected to most European destinations with major airlines operating from the Barcelona El Prat Airport, situated about 17 km from the city centre. There are two smaller airports located near Barcelona, the Sabadell Airport and the Reus Airport. Tourists can board a direct flight to Barcelona from international airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. The flight fare may depend on the airline chosen and the time of the year.
One of the most efficient network systems in Europe, the Barcelona metro has two operators, viz. TMB (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona) and FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya). Collectively, these operators operate the BCN metro on 11 lines that span over 120 kilometres and 169 stations. A single ticket costs €2.15, whereas, the same ticket to the airport is €4.50.
Just like any city, taxi is the easiest way to get to and from anywhere in Barcelona. The service is available all day everyday by reliable drivers. However, not all of them speak English, therefore, make sure that you write the full address on a piece of paper and show it to them.
The tram system in Barcelona was introduced back in 2004, and today, comprises 6 lines that stretch a total of 29.2 kilometres and 56 stations. You can use a T-10 Card, Barcelona Card or metro ticket to travel in trams as it is part of the integrated tariff system.
